(WINDSOR, ON) – The University of Windsor’s Department of Athletics has announced the appointment of Jean-Paul Circelli as the new head coach of the Lancer Football program. The appointment is effective February 1. Circelli becomes only the fifth head coach in the 50-year history of the program.
“I am thrilled to welcome JP Circelli and his family to the University of Windsor,” said athletic director Mike Havey. “JP is a passionate coach and leader and he is very highly regarded in the football community. He has been successful at every level at which he has coached or played, and he has had championship level success throughout his coaching career. We look forward to seeing Coach Circelli lead our football program forward in the years ahead.”
The London native has served as the O-line coach for the Western Mustangs for the past four years. During his tenure, the Mustangs have been among the nation’s leaders in scoring, rushing, and total yards. Under Circelli’s tutilage fifteen Western linemen have been named OUA all-stars, seven of whom were also recognized as USports All-Canadians.
A a member of the Mustangs coaching staff, Circelli has been a part of two straight Yates Cups, back-to-back Vanier Cup appearances, and a Vanier Cup title in 2017. He’s also won four provincial titles with the London Junior Mustangs program.
Circelli enjoyed three consecutive Yates Cups as a player with the McMaster Marauders.
Coach Circelli will bring his brother Joe with him to serve as the new O-line coach for the Lancers. Most recently Joe was the D-line coach and recruiting coordinator with the Mustangs. He was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in 2014 and played two seasons for the Toronto Argonauts.
Circelli and the Lancers will open the 2019 OUA season on Sunday, August 25 when they host the York Lions at Alumni Field.
