(SAINTE-FOY, QC) – The St. Clair women’s basketball team lost a hard fought overtime match-up with Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, BC) Friday afternoon by a score of 93-89 at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship being hosted by Cégep de Sainte-Foy in Quebec City.
The Lady Saints are now out of medal contention and relegated to the 7th place game against Mount Saint Vincent University (Halifax, NS) on Saturday at 2pm.
Vancouver Island scored the first few baskets down low which set the tone for their game plan but St. Clair quickly took over the lead playing to their strength with 3-point shooting. The Saints established a torrid pace from long range and were up 33-19 after the opening frame.
Vancouver Island made inroads in the second quarter, outscoring St. Clair 21-14, however the Saints still held a 47-40 advantage at the intermission. The Saints began to experience foul trouble, though, near the end of the half.
The Island continued to pound it inside and had their best quarter in the third, overtaking St. Clair early in the half. The Saints responded and, after a few lead changes, were still ahead 68-67 entering the final period.
Both teams had chances to win down the stretch, but Vancouver Island did just enough to force overtime with the Saints already having lost leading scorer Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) to the foul limit. In the overtime period the Saints were outscored 10-6 after losing 2 more players to fouls and another to injury.
St. Clair was badly outrebounded by a margin of 65-33 which allowed additional shot attempts and possessions for Vancouver Island who capitalized on the foul trouble making 27-36 (75%) from the free throw line. The Saints did make a remarkable 15 triples (42%) to offset the difference inside, but Vancouver Island still netted 50 points in the paint.
The entertaining contest was tied 5 times and the teams shared the lead 10 times.
Jana Kucera managed to score a game high 34 points before fouling out, including 5 triples while dishing out 6 assists to her teammates. Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne) was named Player of the Game for St. Clair, scoring 22 points and making 4 triples of her own.
Kiersten Tomkins (Sarnia, ON) also reached double figures by scoring 10 points and also recording a double-double with 10 rebounds, to go with 4 steals.
Logan Kucera (Chatham, ON) had a solid game with 9 points and addeing6 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, and a block.
