Saints Dropped From Medal Contention
(SAINTE-FOY, QC) – The St. Clair women’s basketball team fell victim to the Dawson College Blues (Montreal, QC) Thursday afternoon by a score of 87-62 in the opening game of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship being hosted by Cégep de Sainte-Foy in Quebec City.
Dawson jumped out to an early lead and didn’t show much weakness the rest of the game as rebounds leading to transition points came easily. St. Clair trailed 26-15 after the opening quarter but the Saints stayed within striking distance with long range shooting.
St. Clair battled to within seven points at 39-32 in the second quarter but Dawson quickly turned it around for a 49-34 halftime advantage. Dawson opened up their biggest lead in the third quarter as the Lady Saints put up only 7 points in the frame.
St. Clair didn’t pack it in and outscored Dawson 21-19 in the fourth but it wasn’t enough to change the verdict.
Dawson won the war on the glass 59-26 in addition to bench scoring (33-10) and points in the paint (50-20). The Saints did make 9 triples in the game while forcing 26 turnovers that resulted in 22 points which were a few bright spots.
Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) was named Player of the Game scoring a game high 23 points. Twin sister Logan Kucera (Chatham, ON) had a nice overall game scoring 18 points to go with 4 rebounds, 5 steals and a blocked shot.
Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne) chipped in with 11 points adding 3 steals for the Saints.
St Clair’s next game was today against Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, BC) who lost in their opening game 61-37 to Olds College (Olds, AB). The Saints dropped game 2 by a 93-89 overtime decision. St Clair will play a consolation game tomorrow afternoon at 2pm.
